In January, commercial fishing boats gather near Sausalito to harvest small silvery herring that come to lay their eggs along the shoreline. Vast schools of the fish prompt a feeding frenzy among sea birds, sea lions, seals and other hungry marine creatures. Fishermen sell the herring roe mainly to Asia where it is considered a delicacy and used in sushi. When the herring are running, Sausalito often hosts a herring festival celebrating these delicious fish.
