Richardson Bay is named for William Richardson, an English seaman who married to the daughter of the Commandante of the Presidio in 1838 and was given almost 20,000 acres of land in what is now Marin County. After marriage Richardson settled on the shores of Sausalito. William Richardson is considered the historical founder of the town.
